Healthier bread
Wonder Bread from Weston Bakeries Ltd. has undergone a complete makeover. The new Wonder bread is free of artificial preservatives, colours and flavours, and is made with 100-per-cent Canadian wheat, with 10 essential nutrients per serving. Wonder bread is available in four main varieties: Wonder White+ with Fibre, Wonder+ 100% Whole Wheat, Wonder+ Invisibles Loaf with 14 Whole Grains, and Wonder Classic White.

Sparkling flavours
Nestlé Waters Canada has added two new flavours to its line of Sanpellegrino Sparkling Fruit Beverages: Aranciata Rossa (blood orange) and Pompelmo (grapefruit). The sodium-free, premium beverages are made using natural ingredients such as pure cane sugar, and are now available in five varieties, including Aranciata (Sicilian orange), Chinotto (bitter citrus) and Limonata (lemon). Sold in 330-mL recyclable cans in six-packs, the sparkling drinks offer a healthy, thirst-quenching alternative with a uniquely European flavour.

Antioxidant power
Bioflavia from Southbrook Vineyards is organic red wine grape skin powder that offers an easy and convenient way to add antioxidants to beverages, baking and cooking, or to foods such as yogurt or cereal. A 10-g daily serving of the powder contains 11,000 ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) units – the measure of a food’s ability to neutralize the oxidation process and cell damage in our bodies – making it an ideal daily source of health-promoting antioxidants.

Mini treats
REESE Minis candy by Hershey Canada are a small but tasty blend of chocolate and peanut butter, just like the original REESE Peanut Butter Cups. The miniature treats are available in a 130-g pouch, as well as a 210-g re-sealable, stand-up bag.

Sweet beverage
KiKi Maple Sweet Water from Troll Bridge Creek is now available in two new flavours: lemon mint and lemon ginger. The beverages are made with 100-per-cent natural ingredients, including Canadian maple sap, lemon, mint and ginger, and feature more than 80 nutrients designed to naturally rehydrate and replace lost electrolytes. Available in 473-mL bottles, the beverages contain no fat, additives or preservatives, and are low in calories.

Gluten-free pie
Kinnikinnick Foods now offers a gluten-free, ready-to-fill frozen pie crust. The 100-calorie per serving pie crust is also free of dairy, tree nuts, peanuts and preservatives. The crust can be used for either a single or double-crust pie, and is available for a suggested retail price of $4.99 for a package of two eight-inch shells.

Inspired entrées
Vij’s Inspired Indian Cuisine is the new frozen food line from celebrity chef Vikram Vij, Based on cuisine served at Vij’s two Vancouver, B.C. restaurants, the entrées include a wide variety of curries, many of them gluten or dairy free, with no artificial flavours, colours or preservatives. The meals can be heated on the stove, microwaved or boiled in water, all in just 15 minutes or less.

All-natural brew
Spearhead Brewing Company has launched a unique, all-natural, unfiltered beer called Hawaiian Syle Pale Ale. The beer is the new brewery’s first beer, and is an aromatic, hoppy West Coast pale ale brewed with pineapple for a refreshing flavour with notes of citrus and zest. The non-pasteurized and naturally carbonated brew is available at restaurants throughout Ontario.

Potato medley
McCain Foods (Canada) has introduced Harvest Splendour Medleys, a potato-vegetable combination available frozen in four varieties: Potato and Carrot, Potato and Broccoli, Yukon Gold Potato and Mushroom, and Three Potato Medley. Each variety comes with a customized seasoning pack for flavouring to taste. With no artificial flavours or colours, the potato dishes are a convenient and healthy option for busy families.

Power drink
Lemon Lime Green Energy Drink Powder from Amazing Grass features organic yerba mate and matcha green tea, with energy from the company’s Green Superfood blend. The popular blend combines nutrient-dense green food concentrates like organic wheat grass, alfalfa and spinach, with superfoods such as acai and maca for a boost of antioxidants, carotenoids and phytonutrients. The drink powder is made with more than 70-per-cent certified organic ingredients, is gluten and soy-free, is low in calories and fat, and is vegan.

Homegrown bars
Go Ontario! Bars created by producer Taste of Nature and environmental educational organization EcoSource combine cranberries, apples, honey, cherries and oats 100-per-cent sourced from Ontario farms. The healthy bars have no wheat, dairy, preservatives, cholesterol, additives or artificial ingredients, and contain just 130 calories per 40-g serving.

Full-bodied beer
Hop Head Double IPA from B.C.’s Tree Brewing Company is now available at Ontario LCBO stores. The full-bodied beer is loaded with hops for a distinct citrus aroma and sweet malt undertone, and features a dark copper colour and 5.6 per cent alcohol by volume. The award-winning beer is available in six-packs and retails for $12.95.

Greener bottle
The 7UP EcoGreen Bottle from PepsiCo Beverages Canada is the first soft drink bottle made from 100-per-cent recycled PET plastic. Use of the bottle will enable PepsiCo to reduce the amount of virgin plastic used by approximately six million pounds over one year, with a resulting 30-per-cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a more than 55-per-cent reduction in energy use. The new bottle will be used for all 7UP and Diet 7UP products.

Nut-free treats
Sweetpea Baby Food’s Organic Cookies are now peanut free. The tasty, all-natural snacks are available in three flavours: Banana Pear, Pumpkin Spice, and Sweet Apple. Made with 100-per-cent whole grain organic ingredients, the cookies are certified kosher, are vegan, and contain no dairy, eggs, salt, preservatives or additives.

Healthy hemp
Manitoba Harvest Hemp Foods & Oils has rebranded its popular shelled hemp seeds product as Hemp Hearts. The shelled hemp seeds, available in either natural or organic options, are heart healthy and rich in omega-3 and omega-6, protein and fibre, and offer a unique nutty flavour. Hemp Hearts are perfect for adding to salads, cereal and yogurt.
