March 16, 2020, Toronton, Ont. – Axel Schwan, president of Tim Hortons Canada, has written an open letter to company staff and the public to clarify misconceptions regarding employee sick days in light of the coronavirus outbreak.

“We take our responsibility to Tim Hortons guests and team members across Canada very seriously,” he writes in the letter. “It is important for all of us to follow the advice of our public health officials, especially around staying home if you are showing symptoms of COVID-19.

“We have been working with our 1,500 restaurant owners in Canada to follow the advice of their local public health authorities in all cases – including not requiring a doctor’s note when an employee reports in sick. Our policy is clear. Team members should always stay home if they are sick.”

If staff have questions, Schwan notes they can email TeamTimHortons@timhortons.com.

“During this pandemic, we are working hard to do the right thing for the communities we live and work in,” he states. “As information and guidance from public health officials changes, we will reassess and change our procedures and protocols accordingly.”
