Montreal, Que. – La Coop fédérée has made an acquisition that improves its position in Ontario.
La Coop has acquired Agrico Canada Ltd., an independent business that specializes in fertilizers and grain marketing. Its headquarters is in Mississauga, Ont.
The acquisition includes Agrico’s head office, its three distribution centres, a major port in Hamilton, Ont. and two regional centres in St. Thomas, Ont., and Oak Bluff, Sask.
Stake in 11 retail companies
The agreement also gives La Coop a stake in 11 retail companies found in Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
La Coop says the takeover will not affect Agrico employees since the company’s mission and orientation will remain the same.
The acquisition will also help La Coop reduce its costs in Quebec as it can now benefit from using the commercial and harbour facilities along the seaway.
