An Ontario community to be the “Food Community of the Future”?

Infrastructure Canada's Smart Cities Challenge was open to communities across Canada with ideas on improving the lives of residents; for the City of Guelph and Wellington it was based on food

Ottawa – Infrastructure Canada recently called on communities of all sizes to create a plan to improve the lives of their residents through innovation, data and connected technology.

The challenge is called the Smart Cities Challenge and was open to communities across Canada. Applications were due April 24, 2018.

The prizes include funding to help put the winning plans into action. The amounts correspond to the size of the communities:

  • One prize of up to $50 million open to all communities, regardless of population;
  • Two prizes of up to $10 million open to all communities with populations under 500,000 people; and
  • One prize of up to $5 million open to all communities with populations under 30,000 people.

City of Guelph and Wellington County

One of the entries is a joint one from the City of Guelph and Wellington County. Their plan revolves around food.

Infrastructure Canada’s application asks for a 50-word description of each plan. The City of Guelph and Wellington’s was this:

“Guelph/Wellington will become Canada’s first technology-enabled Circular Food Economy, reimagining an inclusive food-secure ecosystem that increases access to affordable, nutritious food by 50%, where “waste” becomes a resource, 50 new circular businesses and collaborations are created, and circular economic revenues are increased by 50%: 50x50x50 by 2025.”

In fact, both communities say their plan will turn them into the “Food Community of the Future.” They see their plan creating “new opportunities and improving the health and food security of [their] community by re-imaging and re-inventing [their] food provisioning system – inspired by nature’s own circular system – and provide a practical roadmap for others to follow.”
