Trio Bakery Inc., a manufacturer of freezer-to-oven filled pastries (widely known as burek pies), has received a $1 million investment from FedDev Ontario to create a fully automated burek pie production facility in Ontario.

With FedDev Ontario’s contribution, Trio Bakery Inc. will retrofit a recently acquired 18,900-square-foot facility in Mississauga, Ont. with advanced equipment, including a fully automated production line. Trio Bakery Inc. anticipates that the automated production line will increase production from 313 pies (made by hand) to 4,200 pies in a day. The facility improvements will promote sustainability and minimize environmental impact by employing energy-efficient equipment and processes that reduce waste and water usage.

As well as adding 15 full-time manufacturing jobs in Mississauga, Trio Bakery Inc. expects to positively impact the local supply chain by purchasing ingredients and packaging from businesses in the Peel and Halton regions. With increased efficiency, Trio Bakery Inc. will also be better-positioned to diversify its export markets and compete outside of Canada.

Established in October 2018, Trio Bakery Inc. was formed when two leading Canadian burek pie manufacturers, Gala Bakery (Hamilton) and Solero Bakery (Toronto), joined forces with the founder of Nafta Foods and Packaging Inc.(Brampton) to establish Trio Bakery Inc. as a separate entity.

Trio Bakery Inc. will honour the commitment of its partner, Gala Bakery, to hire women and newcomers in its workforce, and offer entry-level opportunities to youth candidates. In 2015, Gala Bakery received a Refugee Employment Award from Citizenship and Immigration Canada for its refugee hiring initiative and tradition of hiring newcomers since 2002.

Burek is an ethnic product with Anatolian origins, also found in the cuisines of the Balkans, Levant, Mediterraneas, and other countries in Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Lonely Planet named Burek as one of the top 10 street foods in the world.

Trio Bakery Inc. will market its frozen sweet and savoury burek pie products under the name BÖREK PIE™ in retail locations such as Costco (Ontario), Fortino’s, Sobeys, Dawn Foods and Highland Farms.

In addition to FedDev Ontario’s repayable contribution, this project will leverage over $2 million in private sector investment towards the total project cost of $3.1 million.
