Ag Canada to host key meeting on agriculture exporting


Ottawa, Ont. – Canada will be hosting and taking a leading role in the next Cairns Group Ministerial Meeting, taking place Sept. 7 to 9, 2011 in Saskatoon, Sask.

The meeting will be co-chaired by Canada and Australia, and will focus on World Trade Organization negotiations on agriculture and agricultural trade.

Fair agricultural trade

The Cairns Group is a coalition of 19 agricultural exporting countries which together account for over 25 per cent of world agricultural exports. The Group is dedicated to strengthening international agricultural trade, and to achieving fair trade that provides sustainable benefits for the developing world.

More than 150 guests from 25 countries are expected to attend the Saskatoon meeting, which is the 36th for the annual event.

Focus on farming

Farm leaders from member countries are also invited to attend a session co-hosted by the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, the Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance, and the Australian National Farmers’ Federation.

Member countries include: Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Paraguay, Peru, the Philippines, South Africa, Thailand and Uruguay.
