Pinnacle Foods acquires Garden Protein International

B.C.-based vegetarian producer ready for growth

Richmond, B.C. – Pinnacle Foods Inc., makers of a wide range of packaged foods, including the Birds Eye frozen food brand, has announced that it will acquire Garden Protein International, the producer of plant-based protein brand Gardein, for $175 million.

Richmond-based Garden Protein offers a range of award-winning frozen products made with plant-based protein that serve as alternatives to traditional meat-based items like chicken strips and tenders, ground beef and fish fillets. The brand is one of the fastest-growing frozen health and wellness lines in the U.S.

“The acquisition of Gardein is a key enabler to continue building Birds Eye into the leading health and wellness brand focused on helping Americans eat more vegetables, said Pinnacle Foods CEO Bob Gamgort in making the announcement. “By bringing Gardein under the Birds Eye umbrella, we will accelerate growth through expanded distribution, marketing and innovation.”

The acquisition includes a processing facility in Vancouver that employs roughly 250 people. According to Pinnacle, which is based in Parsippany, N.J., the company will make significant investments in Gardein next year
