Nova Scotia company helps launch omega-3 fortified cooking oil in Asia

Dartmouth, N.S. – Ocean Nutrition Canada Ltd. has entered into an exclusive strategic agreement with Singapore-based Wilmar International Ltd.

Ocean Nutrition is the world’s largest omega-3 EPA/DHA supplier, and is the producer of MEG-3 brand omega-3 ingredients. Wilmar International is Asia’s top agribusiness and a leading producer of omega-3 foods. Already collaboration between the two partners has resulted in the launch of Wilmar’s new Arawana 3A+, a premium cooking oil enriched with MEG-3 fish oil.

According to a survey conducted by China’s Ministry of Health, the average daily intake of EPA/DHA by Chinese consumers is 37.6 mg/day, less than 25 per cent of the recommendations set by the U.S. Institute of Medicine (IOM), and 10 per cent less than the recommendations set by the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids. As a result, Wilmar is launching the new blended vegetable oil in association with the Chinese Nutrition Society in an effort to help Chinese consumers increase their daily omega-3 intake.

“Partnering with Ocean Nutrition Canada is strategically important because they offer not only the most highly trusted source of omega-3 EPA/DHA, but also superior service, and on-going support,” says Mr. Lee, chairman of Yihai Kerry Foodstuffs Marketing Co., Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Wilmar International. “We continue to invest and expand our manufacturing and distribution infrastructure, and this alliance is a significant long-term exciting endeavour for both parties.”
