
Cooke Aquaculture makes European acquisition

Blacks Harbour, N.B. – Cooke Aquaculture has acquired a Spain-based sea bass and sea bream farming operation.
The company, Culmarex S.A., is a fully owned subsidiary of Morpol ASA and is also the largest sea bass and sea bream operation in the country.
The acquisition is valued at EUR 48.7 million.
Culmarex, which has achieved third-party certification, is the only aquaculture company in Spain with a fully integrated management system covering ISOs 9001, 14001, and 18001. The company also carries the European Union Organic label.
Fish farms
In other news, Cooke Aquaculture also opened two new salmon farms in St. Mary’s Bay near Digby, Nova Scotia.
The Grand Passage site is now stocked with 700,000 salmon, reports the Nova Scotia DailyBusinessBuzz.ca. A second farm will be constructed near that site. The company has begun hiring people and was to have 16 new employees by the end of July.
