Ottawa, Ont. – The Farm Products Council of Canada (FPCC) has announced that the current levy of $1 per head of cattle for beef marketed in Canada will now also apply to importers of cattle for beef.
The levy, an amendment to the Beef Cattle Research, Market Development and Promotion Levies Order, will be a source of funding for research, market development and promotional activities on domestic and imported beef.
According to Canada Beef, an estimated $800,000 of additional funding will be collected annually through the import levy.
“The Farm Products Council of Canada and Canada Beef have been collaborating on finalizing this amendment for several years now,” said Canada Beef chair Chuck MacLean, in welcoming the announcement. “This will help beef producers expand their markets and increase sales, and fund research projects, as well as provide increased access to information on beef products to Canadian consumers.”
