Growers on track for record harvest in 2012

Abbotsford, B.C. – The British Columbia Blueberry Council (BCBC) is forecasting that this year’s blueberry harvest is already on track to break records.

According to a report from abbotsfordtimes.com, this year’s blueberry harvest has the potential to be the best in years. The article quotes Mike Makara, chair of the BCBC, who says that “So far it’s going quite well and it’s going to be a big crop, a substantial increase from the last couple of years.”

More acreage planted, a colder spring and less disease have meant more plants and a much larger crop this year. Makara says that in the last three years blueberry yields have sat at about 95 million pounds; this year production should be between 110 and 115 million pounds.
