Trient Ltd. offers food processors a natural, chemical-free option to kill bacteria such as Salmonella, Listeria and E.coli O157:H7

The company uses bacteriophages (or phages) as a basis for its Steak199x300products. These are nature’s way of destroying bacteria. A bacteriophage is a virus that is harmless to humans, animals and plants, but is very effective in killing bacteria.

The company offers SalmoFresh, a novel phage preparation that consists of six specially selected phages for controlling Salmonella in poultry and other foods.

Spraying SalmoFresh on food may significantly reduce or eliminate Salmonella. SalmoFresh will not alter the taste, smell, aroma or nutritional value of food. It also does not have any chemicals or preservatives.

The company also offers ListShield, a novel phage-based preparation for controlling and eliminating Listeria monocytogenes on foods like smoked salmon, meats, poultry, apples and lettuce. It also does not have any chemicals or preservatives.

Another product is EcoShield, which can be used as an antimicrobial in the production of red meat. EcoShield is also the first bacteriophage product approved in Canada for use against E-coli.
