Naturex says it has launched two new natural and taste-free antimicrobial ingredients for the prevention of spoilage in meat products.

Cleanatis M1 and M2, says the company, were developed to fight Listeria and Salmonella.

In a statement, Naturex explains that both ingredients “are synergistic blends of plant extracts that prevent the growth of Listeria and Salmonella, respectively, in the meat matrix.”

Both ingredients can allow manufacturers to have clean labels as the ingredients are alternatives to artificial preservatives. The ingredients are also free of essential oils, so they won’t affect product taste.

Naturex says it submitted the ingredients to testing by independent experts, who measured their performance against other antimicrobials in fresh ground meat.

What they found was that “Cleanatis M1 inhibited growth of Listeria more effectively than classic antimicrobials (sodium lactate and sodium acetate). Cleanatis M2 was more effective than sodium lactate for controlling the growth of Salmonella. Furthermore, Cleanatis M1 and M2 protected colour and taste and had no detrimental impact on the food matrix.
