NZMP, Fonterra’s dairy ingredients business, has developed a protein ingredient that can deliver at least 10 per cent more protein than other standard whey protein offerings.
The company says the new protein is designed to be used in sports drinks and energy bars. It is faster acting and is lower in fat, sugar and carbohydrates than other similar protein products.
While some protein ingredients are traditionally formulated from cheese whey, NZMP’s new protein uses lactic casein whey.
The company adds that the protein market is going beyond sports nutrition. Proteins are needed for the growth and maintenance of all cells and play an important role in healthy aging.
