CFIA Calls for Input on Imports

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is in the early stages of developing new regulations for certain imported food products, and is calling on industry stakeholders and the public for input in the consultation process.
The consultation, available on the CFIA website at www.inspection.gc.ca, is open for comments until Oct. 4, 2010. There will also be opportunities for input during public information and consultation sessions taking place over the next month in Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax, Toronto and Vancouver. More information, dates and registration for these sessions can also be found on the CFIA website.
The proposed regulations will fall under the Canada Agricultural Products Act, and will include enhanced food safety requirements, plus an importer licensing initiative. These new regulations are intended to boost accountability by importers for food safety; enhance the CFIA’s ability to communicate food safety information; and increase consumer confidence in the Canadian food supply chain.
