Last month the winners of the Ontario’s Finest Meat Competition were announced during the Ontario Independent Meat Processors annual conference. Products were evaluated in 12 different categories by a panel of industry professionals, and judged based on factors such as product taste, aroma, texture, and consumer and visual appeal. Winners and products included: Bona Foods (Paisanella Salami), D&D Poultry (Authentic Greek Chicken Gyros Cone), Florence Meats (Prosciutto), Franz’s Butcher Shop (Franz’s Own Country Style Ham), Halenda’s Fine Foods (Porketta), Schinkel’s Legacy (Turkey Kielbossa and Jalapeno and Cheddar Smoked Sausage), Stemmler Meats & Cheese Inc. (Montreal Smoked Bacon), Townsend Butchers (Bacon), VG Meats (Chicken Pot Pie), The Village Kitchen (Prime Rib Sausage), and West Grey Premium Beef (Ontario’s Pride Strip Loin Steak). The winner of the 2009 Ron Usborne Award of Excellence was Simcoe, Ont.-based VG Meats, which had the highest overall score in the competition.
