Toronto – The city of Toronto could see 450 new jobs in the food sector thanks to an Ontario investment in Mondelez Canada.

Ontario’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) says in a statement that it is investing up to $22.6 million towards Mondelez Canada’s $130-million modernization and expansion project.

The plant is home to the Oreo and Ritz brands.

OMAFRA is investing its part through the Jobs and Prosperity Fund – Food and Beverage Growth Fund.

Juan Carlos Torres Rodriguez, Mondelez Canada’s plant manager for the Toronto facility, says in the statement that the investment will help ensure “our products can continue to be made in the province. This investment brings state-of-the-art equipment and the opportunity to increase the skills of our people in new and exciting ways, supporting jobs at the site.”

The statement says the investment will help the company:

  • Expand the production plant
  • Install two new bakery lines
  • Upgrade an existing bakery line
  • Create new products.

OMAFRA adds that the funding will also help support “opportunities in master baking, technician and engineering skills development.”
